The Selected Works of Flora Nwapa

Limited Edition Hardback finished in gold foil with coloured end papers | 216mm by 140mm

FLORA NWAPA (1931-1993) was a Nigerian author and pioneer in African women's literature. Born on January 13, 1931, in Oguta, Nigeria, Nwapa emerged as a trailblazer, breaking barriers in a male-dominated literary landscape.

Her writing exhibits a sincere commitment to challenging societal norms, celebrating the strength and resilience of African women, and shedding light on the struggles faced in a patriarchal Igbo society by exploring the complexities of gender, identity, and traditional customs. In 1983, Nwapa received the Nigerian national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (O.O.N) for literature. She passed away in 1993, leaving an indelible mark on the literary landscape and inspiring future generations of African women writers to embrace their voices and tell their stories.

Novels in this Volume:

Efuru

Set in a traditional Igbo community, Efuru follows the life of a strong-willed and independent woman who defies societal expectations around marriage and motherhood. Despite personal loss and societal pressure, Efuru carves her own path, ultimately dedicating herself to a powerful river goddess. The novel explores themes of female agency, spirituality, and the tension between tradition and modernity.

Idu

In Idu, Nwapa tells the story of a devoted wife whose life centers on her husband and their quest for children. When her husband dies suddenly, Idu breaks with cultural norms by refusing to remarry or bear children with his brother. The novel challenges traditional gender roles and expectations around motherhood, portraying a woman whose loyalty and choices redefine her identity.

Never Again

Never Again is a poignant novella that reflects on the Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War) through the eyes of a female narrator. Unlike Nwapa’s earlier works rooted in village life, this novel captures the dislocation, trauma, and resilience of ordinary people—especially women—during a time of national crisis. It’s a stark meditation on survival, loss, and the costs of war.
